The 'Shop Smart, Shop Local' message will be given an extra boost this autumn with the launch of 'Shop Smart, Shop Local' passports in Buxton.
The passport scheme, which has already raised the profile of independent shops in Chapel-en-le-Frith, New Mills and Whaley Bridge, is going to be extended to Buxton and the Hope Valley.
Shopkeepers will be given information to guide them (toolkits), and 'passports' and stickers to issue to customers. Every time they buy something in a participating local shop, customers will receive a sticker, regardless of the amount spent. When one of the sections on the passport has been completed, it can be entered into a monthly prize draw if it is handed in one of the town halls at Buxton, Chapel-en-le-Frith, New Mills or Whaley Bridge.
There will be a £50 prize in the Whaley Bridge and Buxton draws each month, and a £25 prize each month for Chapel-en-le-Frith and New Mills. The Buxton and Whaley Bridge draws have external funding that make the prize larger. The prize draws, which are a short-term programme to reward and encourage residents who shop local, will run for 6 months only.
The nationwide initiative promotes the social, environmental and economic benefits of shopping locally. This message will be highlighted by a publicity campaign encouraging people to visit local shops. Monthly features in the papers will showcase the wide range of products local shops have to offer.
Councillor Tony Kemp, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Regeneration, said: "We have a good range of shops in our towns and need to support and encourage people to use them. Keeping shops in our town centres and villages also retains and creates local jobs, but they will only survive if people spend money there. Our message is shop local wherever possible."
Passports are available from participating retailers or from the council by phoning 0845 129 77 77. If any retailers would like an additional Shop Smart, Shop Local toolkit they should contact Helen Pakpahan on 0845 129 77 77 or email helenp@highpeak.gov.uk.
