Glossopdale and Hadfield get set to 'Shop Smart, Shop Local'

Date: 27/09/2007

The 'Shop Smart, Shop Local' message will be given an extra boost this autumn with the launch of the 'Shop Smart, Shop Local' passports in Glossop and Hadfield.

Shopkeepers will be given information to guide them (toolkits), and 'passports' and stickers to issue to customers. Every time they buy something in a participating local shop, customers will receive a sticker, regardless of the amount spent. When one of the sections on the passport has been completed, it can be entered into a monthly prize draw if it is handed in at Glossop Municipal Buildings.

The nationwide initiative promotes the social, environmental and economic benefits of shopping locally. This message will be highlighted by a publicity campaign encouraging people to visit local shops. Monthly features in the papers will showcase the wide range of products local shops have to offer.

John Hart, Chair of the Glossop Vision board, said: "We have a good range of local shops in our towns and need to support and encourage people to use them. Keeping shops in our town centres and villages also retains and creates local jobs but they will only survive if people spend money there so our message is shop local wherever possible."

Passports are available from participating retailers or by phoning 0845 129 77 77. If any retailers would like an additional shop local toolkit they should contact Sarah Porru on 0845 129 77 77 or email sarahporru@highpeak.gov.uk.
