£130,000 award to get ex-council homes to 'decent' standard

Date: 10/04/2008

High Peak Borough Council, in partnership with High Peak Community Housing, has been awarded £130,000 from the Regional Housing Board to fund applications for a decent homes grant scheme for the owners of former council properties.

Together with £30,000 from the Borough Council, this means that previous applications that could not be progressed, due to a lack of funding, can now go ahead.

The Decent Homes scheme provides the owners of ex-council properties the opportunity to apply for a grant to bring their home up to the decent homes standard, if they are on benefits.

The grants are means tested but there is a range of initiatives brought together in one package, which means that most applicants should be entitled to some grant support.

Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development said: "Here at High Peak Borough Council we are keen to support people and provide opportunities for our residents to live in a well maintained home that provides a nice environment in which to live.

"This particular grant award is for owners of ex-council properties and with additional funding from the Council, means that we can now get on with making even more improvements, helping homeowners on benefits to bring their properties up to the Decent Homes standard."
