More affordable rented accommodation will shortly be available -- thanks to a £30,000 funding boost from High Peak Borough Council.
Announcement of this funding is excellent news for the recipients, Milnthorp Homes, who can now refurbish three Buxton properties into affordable rented accommodation.
The properties, built in 1904, require extensive refurbishment to bring them up to the Decent Homes Standard. The much-needed funding of £30,000 will go towards the installation of new kitchens and bathrooms, independent heating and an upgrade of the electrics.
Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development, said: "One of our priorities is to support people in the High Peak and we are constantly looking for opportunities where we can obtain affordable housing, that can be built or refurbished.
He added: "I know that the properties are currently not suitable for habitation and have been empty for some considerable time, so it's great to be able to tell people that we can transform these houses into something of real value to the local community."
Ruth Hayter, Chair of the Milnthorp Homes Governors, said: "We are refurbishing three homes to bring them up to 21st century standards, and this major contribution from High Peak Borough Council is a tremendous boost to our fund raising efforts, and a great encouragement to the Governors, as they continue in the work of modernising the homes."
Milnthorp Homes is a charity that provides accommodation to people who are lacking financial resources, living in inappropriate housing, or who have a medical condition, which requires a change of accommodation. The charity has already renovated four properties, using its own reserves and owns a total of 12 properties on Macclesfield Road, Buxton.
Councillor Andrew Bingham, High Peak Mayor Councillor Jean Wharmby and Milnthorp Homes Governors' Chairperson Ruth Hayter will be attending for a presentation of the cheque on Friday 25 April, at 11.30am, at Milnthorpe Homes in Macclesfield Road, Buxton.
