Swimathon 2008: sign up now

Date: 21/02/2008

Buxton leisure services team is urging residents to join up for the national Swimathon 2008, which is taking place at Buxton Spa pool between 17 and 20 April 2008.

Buxton pool is just one of over 500 pools throughout the UK taking part in this year's Swimathon in which 19,000 people are expected to swim to raise £1.8 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation.

Swimathon 2008 is open to everyone, encouraging people to set their own personal challenge by accomplishing a distance of their choice: 1.5 Kilometres (K) for those who swim occasionally, 2.5K for intermediate swimmers - and the ultimate 5K challenge, which requires at least six weeks of training.

For those interested in joining forces with friends, colleagues or family, the 5K challenge can also be completed as part of a team of up to 5 people or, if you prefer to do it all at your own pace, join the Simply Swim challenge, which allows you to cover any distance at any pool, any time.

Councillor Andrew Bingham, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Social and Community Development, said: "Why not set yourself a challenge by getting sponsored to beat you personal best? By joining Swimathon 2008 you will help raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and enjoy the fundraising atmosphere at the pool."
