Proposal of formal controls for street trading

Date: 07/01/2008

High Peak Borough Council is proposing to extend its controls on street and highways trading to the whole of the borough.

Currently these formal controls only apply to a small number of areas in the High Peak and the Council want to make this a borough-wide policy to ensure consistency and fairness.

If approved High Peak Borough Council will introduce a 'Street Trading Consent', which will mean that all traders who want to operate their business from a lay-by or roadside will have to pay a annual consent fee or they may be refused permission to trade. This includes ice cream sellers, lay-by cafés and most other types of street trading.

Councillor John Haken, Executive Member for the Environment said: "At the moment there are a small number of areas in the High Peak where local street traders have to pay a yearly fee.

"The introduction of this new policy will ensure consistency for all on-street businesses and if approved, is something that we want to implement in 2008."

Interested parties can make written representations on the plans until Thursday 7 February 2008 by writing to Tammy Towers, Environmental Health Business Manager, High Peak Borough Council, Hayfield Road, Chapel-en-le-Frith, SK23 0QJ, or by e-mail to borough-council@highpeak.gov.uk.

Copies of the plans can be viewed at www.highpeak.gov.uk/consultation/Street_Trading/default.asp or at its main offices until the 7 February 2008.

The Council will decide on the extension of street trading controls at its meeting on 28 February 2008.
