Free swimming this half term!

Date: 31/01/2008

Half term means free swimming for all children under 16 in the High Peak.

The Borough Council's pools at Buxton, Glossop, and New Mills are offering free swimming from Saturday 16 February to Sunday 24 February during public swimming sessions.

The benefits of exercise to children are well documented, and the Council wants to encourage young people to get into the habit of undertaking regular sports and activities. The free swimming offer is funded by the Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council.

The normal junior swim rate is £1.70, so families whose children swim regularly will make a massive saving.

Young people aged between 14 and 16, who have silver b_line2 cards, will be able to use their cards for half price bus and train fares when they travel to go swimming.

Councillor Andrew Bingham, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Community and Social Development, said: "The free swimming offer is part of the Council's overall strategy to increase young people's participation in sport and activities. Increased activity helps children to perform better at school and reduces obesity and other health risks. As a Councillor I am always asked about providing things for young people to do. This free swim offer is just part of the initiatives that we are running to help answer that question."
