Tell us what you think about our Draft Tree Strategy

Date: 01/07/2008

High Peak Borough Council has produced a Draft Tree Strategy to promote the care and maintenance of trees.

The draft strategy places emphasis on protecting the Borough's existing trees, promoting and practicing good tree care and planting new trees.

The strategy, which is in three parts, sets out the principles that the Council will follow in caring for trees that it owns. In a separate section, guidance notes give practical information and advice about topics such as pruning trees and protecting them whilst sites are being developed. It also sets out how the Council will reach decisions when requests for works to trees are made. The final part of the strategy is an action plan that outlines how the policy will be implemented over the next five years.

John Haken, Executive Councillor for the Environment, said: "Trees play a very important role in all of our lives. They improve the appearance of our streets and open spaces, provide a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, and create better air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and filtering pollutants. The Draft Tree Strategy sets out how we can make the most of these benefits"

He added: "Many community groups across the Borough have been consulted on the plan, but the Council also wants the views of individuals; so I encourage anyone who is interested in improving the Borough's environment to take a look at the document and give us their views."

The Draft Tree Strategy may be viewed until 31 August at Parks and Open Spaces section of our website, and comments can be made here.
