Date: 01/07/2008

The summer school holidays mean free swimming for all children, aged 16 and under, in the High Peak.

The Borough Council's pools, at Buxton, Glossop, and New Mills, are offering free swimming from Thursday 24 July, until Sunday 7 September, during public swimming sessions.

The Council wants to encourage young people to get into the habit of enjoying regular sports and activities because of the enormous benefits to their health.

The normal junior swim rate is £1.70, so families whose children swim regularly will make a massive saving.

Young people, aged between 14 and 16, who have b_line2 cards, will be able to use their cards for half price bus and train fares, when they travel to go swimming.

Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development, said: "Once again, the Council is promoting constructive activities for young people through the free swimming offer. We are encouraging youngsters to keep fit and healthy, improve their swimming skills and have some fun during the summer holidays."

Children, over eight years, may swim without an adult if they can swim 50 metres (two lengths) in a recognised stroke.

Young people who live in Derbyshire and are aged between 14 and 18 and in full-time education, are entitled to a free b_line2 card, which means they can get half price bus and train travel across the county and further afield.
