Young people, aged eight to 16, are in for a feast of free fun throughout the summer holidays -- thanks to the High Peak Sports Fest.

Sporting activities -- ranging from football to orienteering and athletics to rugby -- will be featured in the programme, co-ordinated as part of High Peak Borough Council's Active High Peak campaign.

The Sports Fest -- involving more than 70 sessions across the borough, including Buxton, Glossopdale, Hayfield, Hope Valley, New Mills, North Dales and Whaley Bridge -- starts on Friday, July 25, and will last for six full weeks, until Friday, September 6.

Most of the sessions -- part of the Borough Council's 2008 programme of children's holiday activities -- will be held during the afternoon, between 1pm to 4pm. Anyone wanting to take part can just turn up on the day at the specified venue.

"Throughout the year, we work with a range of partners to make High Peak a better place to live, and this is part of our current campaign to encourage people of all ages to adopt a healthier, more active lifestyle," said Andrew Bingham, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Community and Social Development.

"Each year, we pull together a wide-ranging programme of activities to entertain young people throughout the summer holidays, and this year, there are even more options for them to choose from. With everything from football and cricket to basketball and rounders on offer, throughout the Sports Fest, there are plenty of chances to have fun and stay fit at the same time.

"All these special sessions are free, so I would encourage youngsters throughout the High Peak to come along and enjoy their favourite sports, as well as taking the opportunity to try something new."

High Peak Borough Council's partners in the High Peak Sports Fest include High Peak Community Housing, Derbyshire County Council's Youth Service, SureStart, Fairfield Community Regeneration and Fairplay, with some funding coming from the Borough Council's Going Local Fund.
