Helping hands spruce up town

Date: 22/07/2008

More than 100 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints joined forces with High Peak Borough Council's Parks and Environment team to spruce up Buxton, on Saturday, July 19. The partnership project was part of the church's annual Helping Hands day and the council's environmental improvement campaigns.

The Mayor of High Peak, Councillor Robin Baldry, welcomed the group, who were also joined by Buxton in Bloom Chairperson, Jane Mcgrother.

The group completed a variety of projects in Buxton, which included tidying up St Anne's School grounds and children's garden, and spring cleaning Ashwood Park and the back of the Crescent. They also edged the lawns and tidied up the Slopes.

Some members brought their creative talents to the fore, designing bedding and floral schemes, making boxes for birds and bats, and manning a plant stall.

Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development, said: "This is the second time that a large number of members from this church has visited Buxton. It is great to see how hard they work as volunteers, together with our Parks and Environment team to make Buxton cleaner and brighter. This is a great example how the Council and community groups can work together on projects across the High Peak."

The project complements the town's entry into the East Midlands and Britain in Bloom competition, which will be judged on Thursday, August 7, and includes a community environmental projects category.

The church organises a Helping Hands day every year, when members volunteer to complete a variety of work that contributes to the well being of their local communities.
