Help us to spend £10,000 in your area

Date: 11/06/2008

With the summer fast approaching, High Peak Borough Council is reminding residents about the 'Going Local' initiative to make the Borough 'cleaner, greener and safer.'

Going Local

To highlight the 'Going Local' scheme, Chair of the Central Area Forum, Councillor David Lomax met with Ward Councillor and Executive Member for Social and Community Development Andrew Bingham, and Landscape Projects Officer Christine Latham to have a look at one of the scheme's successes at the Brookside footpath in Chapel-en-le-Frith.

The footpath - adjacent to the stream - is a popular and pretty walk for local residents; however, it had become scruffy and overgrown, until Christine - who works with the Council's parks section for Groundwork Derby and Derbyshire - organised a special clean up of the area with members of the local crime punishment team. Now, the path, which connects Brookside Road and Long Lane, is clean and tidy in keeping with rural backdrop.

Councillor Bingham said: "I am really pleased that we have been able to spruce up this lovely part of Chapel for people to enjoy."

Councillor Lomax said: "This is exactly the sort of project that the 'Going Local' initiative is all about. We would like to hear from residents who may have ideas about other parts of the Borough that might benefit from the funding."

The 'Going Local' initiative is part of the Area Forum programme covering the whole of the High Peak. The forum areas: Buxton, Glossopdale, Central and Hope Valley have been allocated £10,000 to spend on community led projects.

It is not just the Central Area that has benefited from Going Local funding. Over the past two years the programme has helped to transform the other forum areas.
