River engineering work starts in Manor Park

Date: 24/06/2008

High Peak Borough Council will start the important river engineering work in Manor Park this July.

The extensive work will repair damaged riverbeds and weirs caused by flooding. Existing riverbanks and watercourse structures will be refurbished and will include erosion protection measures.

The repairs, which will carry on until September, are being made after careful consultation with the Environment Agency. The summer months are the best time for this work because it avoids the trout breeding season, and so is friendlier to the fish.

A small corner of Manor Park - next to the Corn Street car park - has been set aside for the engineers' compound. After careful planning, only seven car parking spaces will be lost, but work will be arranged to minimise disruption, as much as possible.

Following completion of the work, the Council will be providing annual maintenance to the Corn Street weir. This used to be maintained by Volcrepe.

John Haken, Executive Councillor for the Environment, said: "I hope that these necessary repairs will not inconvenience people, but summer is the environmentally friendly time for them to be carried out. Work on the river was due to start last summer but had to be cancelled because of the exceptionally wet weather."
