Placement opportunity for young people

Date: 04/03/2008

High Peak Borough Council is inviting young people, aged 16 to 25, to gain life skills by taking a summer placement at Glossop Leisure Centre and Gamesley Community Centre.

Young people with a genuine interest in health, sport, recreational and cultural activities, who enjoy working with children, are being invited to apply for a summer placement.

The voluntary work will mainly be helping to run the activity programmes at Glossop Leisure Centre and Gamesley Community Centre.

Young people will be able to gain hours and work towards getting a reference that will help them move into employment.

All volunteering hours can be recorded through V-inspired and Glossop Volunteer Centre. By logging the hours that they do, young people who register for the scheme will receive a certificate when they finish their chosen voluntary activity and will be able to claim back any expenses that they have incurred through their placement.

Councillor Andrew Bingham, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Social and Community Development, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to use their passions and skills to really get involved and make a difference in the community. If you would like a challenging summer, which will also give you some valuable work experience, then don't hesitate, apply now!"

To find out more about the project and to make an application, please contact Lisa Jowitt, Gamesley Community Centre Co-ordinator at Gamesley Community Centre, Melandra Castle Road, Gamesley, Glossop or email: customer-services@highpeak.gov.uk.

Alternatively, ring Darren Crimes on 01457 890903, or drop in at the Hands On! Youth Project, at Glossop Volunteer Centre, Howard Town House, High Street East, and have a chat with him.

Further information about this Vinspired scheme is available at www.vinspired.com (External website**).

The Hands On! Youth Project aims to offer new experiences of community engagement and personal empowerment to young people, who would normally not have such opportunities. In the past, through the scheme, young people have organised several projects ranging from a teenage pregnancy information campaign to several youth events, including club and cinema nights.

Hands On! is a multi agency platform, offering the flexibility for young people to channel their energies constructively and in a manner befitting their own aspirations or desires. We also look to offer accreditation through the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, V-inspired and the John Muirs Trust -- in order to increase young people's employability and offer them new skills, along with the opportunity to become decision makers.

In addition, the Hands On! Project is constantly building links within the community and with local businesses to create new leisure and learning opportunities for the young people of Glossopdale. We are currently developing a Youth Mountain Biking Club and will be hoping to establish the Duke of Edinburgh Award as a Multi-agency initiative in September.
