Figures confirm that the Council's free swimming offer to children under 16 during February half term 2008, has resulted in a massive boost to pool attendances.
A total of 2,536 children attended the Borough's pools during the February half term 2008, compared to 1,421 attendances in February half term 2007. This is an increase of 78%.
The most impressive increase was at Glossop pool where attendances more than trebled from 277 last year to 905 this year.
The free swim promotion was part of the council's wider commitment to encourage young people, in particular, to become actively involved in sports and pastimes that reduce anti-social behaviour and improve health and lifestyles.
Councillor Andrew Bingham, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Social and Community Development, said: "I am delighted to see that youngsters have taken advantage of the half term promotion. The free swimming offer aimed to encourage young people to keep fit and healthy, at a time when the winter weather can discourage exercise."
The table shows attendances at High Peak pools during the February half term last year and this year:
| Junior Swims | 2007 | 2008 |
|---|---|---|
| Buxton Pool | 822 | 1130 |
| Glossop Pool | 277 | 905 |
| New Mills Pool | 322 | 501 |
