Buxton pool is just one of over 500 pools, throughout the UK, taking part in this year's Swimathon, which takes place between Thursday 17 April and Sunday 20 April, when 19,000 people are expected to swim to raise £1.8 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Swimathon Foundation.

Swimathon 2008 is open to everyone. People are encouraged to set their own personal challenge by accomplishing a distance of their choice:

For those who prefer to go at their own pace, the Simply Swim challenge will allow them to cover any distance, at any pool, any time.

Spectators can help by sponsoring local people who are taking part in the Swimathon, or by volunteering to count laps at Buxton pool.

Councillor Andrew Bingham, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Social and Community Development, said: "Come along and enjoy the fundraising atmosphere at the pool during Swimathon weekend. If you don't want take part, then sponsor a friend and come along to support them."
