Workshops to help self-employed people

Date: 06/05/2008

High Peak Borough Council is working in partnership with Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs advice team to provide a number of free workshops, for people who already work for themselves and those thinking of becoming self-employed.

The Becoming Self-Employed half-day workshops provide information on how to register, set up and maintain business records, and pay tax and National Insurance contributions.

These morning workshops will take place between 9.30am and 1.15pm at New Mills Adult Education Centre, on Wednesday 21 May, and Tuesday 9 September, and at Glossop Gas Works on Tuesday 8 July, and Tuesday 4 November, 2008.

The Self Assessment for the Self Employed workshop is for people who already work for themselves and provides information on new tax returns and changes to self-assessment and allowable expenses. This workshop will take place on Tuesday 10 June, between 9.30am and 3.30pm, at Glossop Gas Works.

Councillor Tony Kemp, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Regeneration, said: "This is another example of how the Council has earned its excellent reputation for working with partners and the business community to develop the local economy. If you think you will benefit from one of the workshops, then book your place now."

To book a place on one of the courses, please contact Lawrence Milner at High Peak Borough Council on 0845 129 7777 extension 3528 or email customer-services@highpeak.gov.uk.

Free and impartial advice for people thinking of starting in business is also available through Business Link East Midlands. Please telephone 0845 058 6644 to make an appointment, to meet locally with a start-up adviser, at High Peak Borough Council offices.
