Be safe on Bonfire Night

Date: 01/10/2008

High Peak Borough Council is urging Bonfire Night revellers to attend only registered events during this year's Guy Fawkes celebrations.

District and borough councils in Derbyshire have joined forces with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service to encourage pubs, clubs, schools and other event organisers to get their displays registered under the voluntary regional scheme.

Organisers who apply for registration to local councils, are visited by Fire and Rescue Service representatives and are offered information and advice on staging a safer event. Registered events organisers must make sure displays are carefully planned and staged. This includes choosing the correct display position, crowd control and making sure the Bonfire Night is properly supervised.

John Haken, Executive Member for the Environment, said: "We want Bonfire Night to be both safe and fun. Registered events mean that organisers have discussed their plans with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and received the relevant information and advice to help them enjoy successful celebrations."

As part of the scheme, the Council will publicise registered events on our website and will issue a press release about registered events before bonfire night.

Organisers who want an application pack to join the scheme, and anyone else who requires more information on the Bonfire Registration Scheme, can find this on our website at www.highpeak.gov.uk/environment/firework.asp or contact us on 0845 129 7777.
