More of your plastics can be recycled

Date: 06/10/2008

Recycling is becoming easier in the High Peak because residents can now take a greater variety of plastics to the Council's recycling banks.

All household plastic bottles and containers, such as butter tubs, yoghurt pots, food trays and drinks cups can be deposited in the plastics recycling banks. Until recently only plastic bottles could be recycled at the Borough's bring sites.

Different plastic products have their own numbers known as Polymer Identification numbers. High Peak's recycling banks will accept numbers 1, 2, 5, and 6. These numbers are found on the label or on the bottom of plastic containers, enclosed within a small triangle.

John Haken, Executive Councillor for the Environment, said: "I am pleased that we have extended the range of plastics recycling. The Council is keen to help our residents to recycle as much possible and continue to reduce the amount of refuse going to landfill sites.

"High Peak residents have recycled over 120 tonnes of plastic bottles, between April and August this year, and we hope to be able to recycle much more now we can accept other types of plastic."
