THE Clean Team -- a joint rapid-response street cleansing team -- has been set up by High Peak Borough Council and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council.

Comprising a road sweeper, a vehicle and two operatives, the Clean Team 'Hit Squad' has started this week (October 6, 2008) to blitz streets, operating alternate weeks in each area.

The initiative is financed by £77,000 of savings from each council, totally funded from efficiencies achieved through joint working in the councils' strategic alliance, which was announced in May this year.

John Haken, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Councillor for the Environment, said: "We very much welcome this initiative, that will result in cleaner streets and public spaces. This is a significant development, made possible as a result of our strategic alliance, where we have shared best practice and achieved savings in a short period of time."

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council portfolio holder for the environment, Councillor Arthur Forrester, said: "The first fruits of our strategic alliance are being re-invested in our communities and the environment. By working together more efficiently, we have made substantial savings, which now in turn fund this welcome addition to both our councils' existing cleaning operations."
