Awards for Peak sports champions

Sports achievers in High Peak attended a special awards ceremony at the Pavilion Gardens in Buxton on Thursday night, October 16, 2008.

The awards, which celebrate the success of sports champions and volunteers, of all ages and disciplines, from around the borough, precede the county ceremony and the national awards.

The Mayor of High Peak Councillor, Robin Baldry and Andrew Bingham, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development, presented awards to the winners, who were selected from nominations made to a sports selection panel.

Charlotte Wild, who competes for Buxton Ladies Rugby Club, and has represented England Under 20s rugby team, won Sports Person of the Year.

James Moss won the Disabled Sports Person of the Year for his commitment to High Peak Sharks Swimming Team.

Athlete Jack Andrew, who attends Chapel High School, picked up the Junior Sportsman of the Year prize, and Katie Byres, who attends Glossopdale Community College, won the Junior Sportswoman of the Year category for her achievements in pole vault.

Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year was awarded to Madeline Thompson, who has been selected as part of the England training squad, and aims to compete in the 2012 London Olympics.

International sailor Rick Whitehouse, from Combs Sailing Club, was named Veteran Sportsperson of the Year, and the Young Sports Leader title was awarded to 16-year-old Scott Mairs, from High Peak Gymnastics Club.

Members of Glossop Judo Club were delighted to receive the Club of the Year awards for the third year running, while Shockers Cheerleaders Senior Dance Team was awarded the Team of the Year award, and Glossop Rugby Club Under 18s received the Junior Team of the Year award.

High Peak Community Coach of the Year went to Malcolm Tilley for his work with Glossopdale Devils Inline Hockey Club.

Norman Taylor received the Service to Sport Award for his work with Buxton Athletics Club and his continued commitment to provide sports news for High Peak Radio.

Councillor Bingham said: "These awards confirm that we have a diverse wealth of sporting talent in the High Peak. On behalf of the council, I congratulate all of the award winners and wish them luck in the county and national stages."
