Date: 12/09/2008

Buxton's bid for floral glory is in full blossom, after news that the town has scored a 'hat trick' of successes in East Midlands in Bloom and is now bound for this year's national finals.

Buxton in Bloom organisers are delighted that the town has scored first prize and a Silver Gilt medal for the third successive year in the Large Town (12,001 - 35,000 residents) category. They are also representing the region in the national Britain in Bloom finals this year. Results are eagerly anticipated and will be announced at Chester Racecourse on September 24.

"This is brilliant news for everyone involved in this year's Bloom campaign, from the hard-working committee members to the many businesses and residents, who have worked in partnership with the Borough Council by contributing both their time and money to make this year's effort such a triumph," said John Haken, Executive Councillor for the Environment.

"Hopefully we will now go on to even greater heights by achieving national success. Many congratulations to everyone involved."

Jane McGrother, Chairperson of the Buxton in Bloom Committee, said: "We are delighted to win our category for the third time in a row, and very grateful to all those who took part. Buxton in Bloom brings together the whole community, including many volunteers, and they should all feel very proud of their achievement.

"Pupils, staff, parents and governors at Buxton Junior School also deserve a special mention for winning a Silver medal in the Best School Garden category. They have only had their garden for a year, so for them to have their hard work and enthusiasm rewarded in this way is marvellous."

Regional winners were announced at the Council House, Nottingham on Wednesday September 10, when a number of Bloom projects in Buxton also attracted accolades.

High Peak Borough Council received a Judges Award for our cutting edge, environmentally sensitive management of the Pavilion Gardens.

Judges praised the only Green Heritage Park in the East Midlands for its high quality floral displays, wonderful collection of trees and chemical-free gardening methods, describing it as 'the jewel in Buxton's crown'.

In the Small Communities Category, a certificate of outstanding achievement went to Cavendish Fields Residents Association for its creative amenity area, including an imaginative tree sculpture. Both Dovedale Crescent and Milton Court received certificates of merit in the Medium Communities section for their colourful gardens and floral displays.

Other highlights singled out for praise from the judges were Buxton's floral displays and entrance displays at gateways into the town, the grounds of Milnthorpe Homes, care of trees, the Cavendish Hospital Garden, St Anne's RC Primary School and the Serpentine Project.

Buxton in Bloom is a partnership between a number of organisations, including the Borough Council, Friends of Pavilion Gardens, Vision Buxton and Buxton Civic Association, with contributions from a wide range of business sponsors.
