Glossop Sailing Club (Sail Glossop) hosted a recent windsurfing taster session, after successfully winning funding from High Peak Borough Council's Small Grants Pot.
The club received £500 to buy two new windsurfing rigs and can now offer taster sessions for young people in windsurfing.
Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development, braved the waves to have a go at windsurfing and met some of the young people who will benefit from the grant.
He said: "The Small Grants Pot continues to make a big difference to voluntary organisations, who provide a wide variety of opportunities for residents to take part in local activities. I was tremendously impressed with the club and what they offer for people, both young and old. A range of activities are available on the water and I can heartily recommend them. I like to visit local organisations, that we have supported through the community grants scheme, although this is the first one that has seen me windsurfing!"
Regular windsurfing taster sessions will start in spring 2009, in addition to the existing opportunity to have a taster session in a dinghy. Full details of dates will be available on the Sail Glossop website, www.gdsc.org (external website**) or you can contact the club on 01457 854054.
The High Peak Borough Council Small Grants Pot opened for applications on Monday, September 1, 2008, and will close on Sunday, November 30, 2008. Voluntary organisations can bid for grants of up to £500.
Details of the criteria and application form can be found here, or call 0845 129 7777 or 01298 28400, extension 2208.
