Actively keeping senior residents healthy

Date: 30/09/2008

The Gamelsey Community Centre team is encouraging senior residents to take part in a special weekly activity session.

Keeping fit through physical activity can help pensioners to improve their quality of life. By building muscle strength, they can become more mobile and lessen the risk of falls and hip fractures, so that they can remain independent.

The session, which costs £1.50, takes place every Wednesday, between 11.15am and noon, at Gamesley Community Centre.

A qualified instructor leads the activities. For people with limited mobility, there are seated exercise routines.

Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development, said: "An active lifestyle is important for staying healthy and independent. Exercise helps us feel better and enjoy life more, even if we think we are too old or too out of shape. We work hard to provide activities for young people, but we must try to cater for all ages. This is such an event that is aimed at a different age range, so why not pop along on a Wednesday morning?"
