Whaley Town

The Whaley Bridge Amenity Society and Friends of Memorial Park, are organising a clean up of the Memorial Park. The Amenity Society will also be working to remove litter from Randall Carr Brook and the River Goyt in the Horwich End and Bridge Street areas. Representatives from the Council's Grounds Maintenance team will be on hand with bags, litter pickers and gloves to assist all budding volunteers.

The event is part of the Montgomery Watson Harza (MWH) Mersey Basin Week, which has been held every autumn for the last 15 years. It is the biggest event of its kind in the north west, and attracts hundreds of people, who get involved in a multitude of water related activities throughout the region.

Everyone interested in joining the clean up squads is invited to meet at the Wheatsheaf Road entrance to the Memorial Park on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at 10am, and in Tom Brad's Croft car park on Sunday, October 5, 2008, at 10am.

Both events are expected to last for two hours. A hot pot lunch will be available at the Navigation Inn, off Canal Street, on Sunday, at noon.

Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development, said: "This is an annual community event and, if you enjoy helping to maintain our treasured beauty spots, it will be a very rewarding day. The Council is delighted to work with local groups and volunteers to enhance these lovely parts of Whaley Bridge and I shall certainly be going along to help and offer my support to the group, and look forward to meeting people on the day."

Councillor John Pritchard, Chairman of the Whaley Bridge Amenity Society and the Etherow Goyt Partnership, said: "One of the aims of the society is to stimulate public interest in, and care for, the beauty, history and character of Whaley Bridge and its surroundings. The autumn clean-up provides a chance for volunteers to come along and give us a hand. If you are interested, you will be more than welcome."
