Glossop taxi drivers will soon have access to a 24-hour taxi rank after proposals were approved to introduce changes to the Henry Street taxi rank.
Proposals were put forward by the Borough Council after they were approached by members of the taxi trade who felt there was sufficient demand for an additional daytime rank in the centre of the town.
The final scheme for the 24-hour taxi rank will operate as follows:
Speaking about the changes, John Haken, Executive Councillor for the Environment said: "We know that some people and local businesses had concerns about the proposed changes which is why we have worked very closely with the Highway Authority to ensure any issues with congestion and safety have been addressed within the new scheme.
"The daytime taxi rank on the flat ground can be accessed by disabled customers, unlike the cobbled and inclined taxi rank on Norfolk Street, and so disabled people will benefit.
"Customers for Henry Street shops will be able to park close by, free of charge for one hour, as opposed to parking illegally on double yellow lines. Again, disabled drivers will also be able to use this facility. Added benefits for Henry Street shops included two dedicated loading bays.
"Overall, the introduction of all these changes has brought about some good improvements for the centre of Glossop which is why the scheme was adopted."
