Homes, Jobs and Services - Your Chance to Decide the Location of New Growth

Date: 27/04/2009

By 2026 High Peak will need to accommodate growth in houses, employment and services of a scale equivalent to the towns of Chapel-en-le-Frith and Whaley Bridge combined. High Peak Borough Council is seeking the views of local people on the important decision of where new development will be located.

The scale of new growth in the Borough is dictated by the East Midlands Regional Plan. This requires that some 6,000 new homes be provided in High Peak between 2006 and 2026. Employment, community facilities, shops and other facilities will also need to be planned and provided to meet the needs of future generations. The Council also needs to consider the unique environment of the Peak District - and how people will move about in an increasingly congested world.

Councillor Linda Baldry promotes the Core Strategy consultation at an exhibition in Glossop town centre.

Prepared jointly with Derbyshire Dales District Council, the Derbyshire Dales and High Peak Core Strategy will decide how the area develops up to 2026. Residents of High Peak are now being asked to help develop these future plans for the area. A major consultation exercise on the issues that the area faces and the potential options for addressing them started on 26 March 2009, and runs through until 21 May 2009.

The 'Issues and Options' consultation document seeks views on the:

Linda Baldry, Executive Councillor for Planning said: "We would like people's views on the key issues that the Core Strategy needs to address and the options that have been identified to do this. Once adopted the Core Strategy will form the basis for the Borough Council's decisions about how the area develops up to the year 2026 so we want as many people as possible to share their views with us.

She continued: "Please don't miss the opportunity to have your say and I would especially encourage young people to get involved and let us know how they feel the area should develop - after all they are the future."

The full document is available at Council offices, local libraries and online. There are exhibitions at the Conservatory in Pavilion Gardens, New Mills Library and other venues across the Borough.
