New games area gives youngsters sporting chance

Date: 20/08/2009

Work has started on the construction of a new multi-use games area at Glossop.

Funded by High Peak Borough Council, High Peak Community Housing, the Pride of Whitfield Community Group and the Football Foundation, the £67,000 project focused on the Whitfield Play Area will take around three weeks, enabling the facility to be ready by mid September.

And on Monday 24 August, Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development, set the ball rolling by cutting the first sod.

Said Councillor Bingham: ""The hard standing, all-purpose facility is great news for the community as it will provide a venue for informal recreation and organised activities. A big thank you goes to all the organisations that have raised money to make the facility possible, however I would particularly like to thank the young people of Whitfield for their efforts in this. Young people too often get a bad press but I have seen first hand the involvement they have had with this and they are a credit to themselves and to Whitfield."

"Once the facility's up and running, we'll have an official opening event to thank everyone formally" he promised.
