High Peak Deputy Mayor, Councillor Cynthia Mitchell died in the early hours of Sunday morning (23 August).
Councillor Mitchell represented Tintwistle Ward and was elected to the Borough Council and Tintwistle Parish Council in May 2007.
Councillor Mitchell served on numerous committees including Social Inclusion & Community Select committee and Development Control committee as well as representing the Borough Council at the Tintwistle Community Centre committee and Glossop Police Liaison group.
She was elected as Deputy Mayor in May this year.
Councillor Tony Ashton, Leader of High Peak Borough Council said: "We are shocked and extremely saddened by Cynthia's death.
"She was a great character, very supportive of me but that didn't stop her letting me know in no uncertain terms when she wasn't happy - you took Cynthia for granted at your peril!
He went on to say: "Cynthia was so proud to be both Deputy Mayor and to be elected by the people of Tintwistle who were her first consideration.
"Our thoughts are with Eric, their family and friends at this sad time."
At this point no details of funeral arrangements are available.
