High Peak's first citizen was continuing a proud family tradition when he was confirmed as Borough Mayor at a meeting of the full council on Tuesday 15 December.
For Councillor Peter Kay's grandfather was Mayor of Radcliffe Borough, Manchester in 1936 while his father was chairman of Bredbury and Romiley Urban District Council in 1953.
Councillor Kay had been acting as Mayor since the untimely death of his predecessor, Tony Bingham, in September.
Speaking after full council, he said it was an honour to have been confirmed Mayor until May and that he would continue to represent High Peak to the best of his ability.
Wishing residents a happy Christmas and peaceful New Year, he asked people to remember the Armed Forces in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as anyone who would be spending the festive season alone or in misfortune.
He will be accompanied at civic engagements by his consort, Mrs Doreen Mottram, a family friend from Hadfield.
Elected to the council for the first time in 2007, he sits on the corporate and regeneration select committees, as well as on the development control committee.
Aged 68 and a resident of Padfield, he is a lifelong Manchester United supporter.
Before retiring, he worked in ICT for 35 years, firstly for Elliott Automation developing military aircraft navigation systems. He then moved to English Electric Leo Marconi Computers, which later became ICL and then Fujitsu Siemens. He worked initially as a systems engineer before becoming a manager.
Councillor Bob Morris was appointed Deputy Mayor at the same meeting.
