High Peak Executive proposes a 2.5% council tax increase

Date: 17/02/2009

High Peak's Executive Committee is recommending a 2.5% increase in Council Tax -- half percent lower than the 3% originally proposed.

The Council will decide the council tax rate for the next financial year when Members meet on Thursday, March 5, 2009.

If the Council approves the 2.5% increase, then the annual rate on a Band D property will rise by £4.19 to £171.84 from Wednesday, April 1, 2009.

Emily Thrane, Executive Councillor for Corporate Services, said: "We considered comments which had been made by the Corporate Select Committee and agreed to recommend a 2.5% increase. It is our policy to try and keep council tax increases in line with inflation. We are also showing our residents that we can do our bit to tighten our belt at a difficult time."

The 2.5% proposed increase is for High Peak Borough Council's part of the council tax charge. High Peak residents also pay council tax to Derbyshire County Council, the Police and Fire and Rescue Authorities and in some places to Parish or Town Councils. These organisations may be proposing different increases for their share of the overall council tax charge.
