High Peak Borough Council met with local groups last week to discuss their requests for more allotments in Glossopdale.
The Borough Council currently manages and leases out several allotment sites across the Borough. The Jordan Street allotment site is the only Council run site in Glossop and currently has a long waiting list. Although there are other private sites in Glossop and Padfield, the overall demand for allotments means that people can face a long wait for allotments. This is a national problem.
The meeting, held at Bradbury Community House, was chaired by Councillor John Haken and was attended by representatives from Glossopdale Action for Allotments (GAFA), Dig Hadfield and Gamesley Residents' Association, who are all keen to establish more allotments in the area.
John Haken, Executive Councillor for Environmental Services, said. "The meeting was very positive. Everbody got involved and spoke, and many good ideas were suggested. As a result, we have a long list of potential sites. The Council is keen to work closely with local groups to identify sites and help them establish more allotments in Glossopdale.
"The next meeting is due to take place in February, when hopefully, we will be able to move the discussion forward, agreeing a shortlist of sites and discussing best practice for the development and management of new sites."
