All clear for goods vehicles in fly tipping crackdown

Date: 16/07/2009

Goods vehicles inspected by officials in a campaign against fly tipping have been given a clean bill of health.

Street scene and enforcement officers from High Peak Borough Council joined forces with the Environment Agency and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency on Tuesday 30 June to stop and search goods vehicles.

Brought in by the Derbyshire Fly Tipping Forum, the officials inspected the waste transfer documents and registration certificates of vehicles found to be carrying waste.

Said John Haken, executive councillor for the environment: "Thankfully, all vehicles that were stopped were found to have the correct paperwork. However, the high-visibility presence of three organisations working in partnership should send a message to would-be fly tippers or trade vehicle operators thinking of carrying waste illegally".

As everyone who produces waste has a duty to dispose of it properly, the public should obtain a waste transfer document from contractors offering waste disposal services.

Meanwhile, a spate of fly tipping of tyres in the countryside has forced the council to withdraw its Clean Team from its regular duties until the tyres have been removed.

Residents are reminded that up to two tyres at a time can be disposed of free of charge at the Melandra Waste Transfer Station off Brookfield, Glossop.
