Sporting chance for holidaymaking schoolchildren

Date: 16/07/2009

There will be no excuse for Hadfield youngsters getting bored during the summer holidays.

Football, rounders and hockey will be among the sports on offer in Chapel Lane Park every Tuesday and Thursday from 1pm to 3pm, starting on Tuesday 28 July.

The activities and coaching are being offered by Peak Active Sports in partnership with High Peak Borough Council as part of an ongoing street-sports initiative that began at Easter to keep young people fit and healthy during school holidays.

All the activities are led by fully qualified coaches with expertise in working in the community.

The street sports are funded from a £5,000 Big Lottery award that also includes £100,000 capital for refurbishing playgrounds across the borough.

Said Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development: "We all look forward to the summer holidays but, to be honest, time can start dragging after those first few days of freedom. Hopefully, our street sports will keep boredom at bay while giving youngsters a chance to make new friends and stay healthy".
