Borough Council backs awareness-raising event

High Peak Borough Council will be flying the flag for our armed forces on Monday 22 June at 10.30 am.

Mayor and Mayoress Tony and Mary Bingham will be joined by other community leaders to raise a specially-modified version of the Union Flag to mark a national awareness-raising event called Fly a Flag for our Armed Forces.

The ceremony will take place at the council's offices in Hayfield Road, Chinley. Flags will also be flown at Glossop Town Hall and Buxton Town Hall. The Chinley flag raising will also be attended by representatives of The Royal British Legion and Army Cadets.

The events are among numerous taking place nationwide, taking their lead from a ceremony at the Historic Dockyard, at Chatham, Kent.

The flag-raising ceremonials form part of Armed Forces Day, which aims to promote understanding of the crucial role played by the Armed Forces in defending the nation, its people and interests.

Said Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup: "Our armed forces perform superbly in the service of the nation, from war fighting to humanitarian relief, from peacekeeping to search and rescue, and much else besides. And sometimes, alas, they pay the ultimate price".

"Regulars, reservists and their families have more than earned the nation's gratitude", he paid tribute.
