Borough Council confirms 2.5% increase in council tax

Date: 09/03/2009

High Peak Borough Council have agreed a below inflation council tax rise of 2.5% - this compares with a rise of 3% for the previous year.

The majority of the council tax bill for High Peak residents is distributed to the County Council, the Police and Fire Authorities with an average payment of only £2.61 each

week going towards High Peak Borough Council services.

The budget for the next 12 months will enable an investment programme of over £11 million that will:

  1. Secure funding and strengthen planning policies to build more affordable homes.
  2. Develop a task force to deal with rising unemployment in the target areas such as New Mills, Gamesley, Fairfield, Whitfield and Buxton Central.
  3. Drive the regeneration of our towns and town centres by:
    • enabling construction of the Buxton Crescent and Thermal Spa Project;
    • conducting a study on our market towns - to include Whaley Bridge, Chapel-en-le-Frith, New Mills, Buxton and Glossop;
    • starting construction of the Arts Centre in the existing Paxton Suite, Pavilion Gardens;
    • facilitating appropriate development at Woods Mill, Glossop;
    • safeguarding the future of Glossop Town Hall as a community asset; and
    • supporting the improvement of medical facilities at Easton House and George Street.
  4. Improve resident satisfaction in standards of street cleanliness across the Borough.
  5. Continue to make the Council more efficient.

Tony Ashton, Leader of High Peak Borough Council, said: "This year's council tax is the lowest yet at just 2.5% and with just one-eighth of each resident's bill going to High Peak Borough Council, we know that we are offering people excellent value for money.

"One of the ways we have achieved this has been through a 'strategic alliance' with Staffordshire Moorlands District Council - a partnership that has allowed us to provide high standards and keep council tax increases to a minimum."
