Small businesses encouraged to claim relief

Date: 17/03/2009

High Peak Borough Council is encouraging small business owners to check whether they may be entitled to small business rates relief.

Businesses in the High Peak will have now received their 2009/10 business rates bills.

The owners of businesses who have only one property with a rateable value of less than £15,000 are entitled to small business rates relief.

Where the rateable value is less than £5,000 businesses will definitely get a 50% reduction to their bill. Where the rateable value is above £5,000 and below £10,000 the amount of the discount reduces on a sliding scale.

Business owners who believe that they may be entitled to the discount are encouraged to contact High Peak Borough Council to make a claim. Those who made a successful claim last year should have their discounts automatically granted for this year and it will be shown on their bills as 'SBR Relief'.

Emily Thrane, Executive Councillor for Corporate Services, said: "The Council is committed to supporting businesses. So if you run your own business and believe that you may qualify for relief then please contact us."

Last year the Council awarded over £837,000 in small business rates relief to more than 1,350 claimants. The awards ranged from just a few pounds to a maximum of over £1,100 per case.
