Sporting Chance for Holidaymaking Schoolchildren

Date: 18/05/2009

Council gets streetwise with sport

FOOTBALL, rounders and hockey will be among the sports served up for Hadfield youngsters to celebrate half-term next week.

Chapel Lane Park is the setting for the free feast of fun, open to all on Wednesday (27 May) from 1pm to 3pm.

The activities and coaching are being offered by Peak Active Sports in partnership with High Peak Borough Council as part of an ongoing street-sports initiative to keep young people fit and healthy during school holidays. The programme began at Easter and will continue during the six-week summer break.

All the activities are led by fully qualified coaches with expertise in working in the community.

The street sports are funded from a £5,000 Big Lottery award that also includes £100,000 capital for refurbishing playgrounds across the borough.

Said council parks officer Sally Curley: "There can't be many finer ways of spending the half-term holiday than playing sport with your friends and - what's more - it won't cost a penny".
