New games area gives youngsters sporting chance

Date: 02/11/2009

Friday 6 November will see the official unveiling of a new multi-use games area at Glossop.

The £67,000 improvement to Whitfield Play Area was funded by High Peak Borough Council, High Peak Community Housing, the Pride of Whitfield Community Group and the Football Foundation.

The facility was welcomed this week by Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development at the borough council. He will be joined at the official opening by Whitfield Ward Councillor Graham Oakley, and Borough and County Councillor Jean Wharmby plus representatives of High Peak Community Housing, Pride of Whitfield and Derbyshire County Council Youth Services.

Said Councillor Bingham: ""The hard standing, all-purpose facility is great news for the community as it will provide a venue for informal recreation and organised activities. A big thank you goes to all the organisations that have raised money to make the facility possible. However, I would particularly like to thank the young people of Whitfield for their efforts in this. Young people too often get a bad press but I have seen first hand the involvement they have had with this, and they are a credit to themselves and to Whitfield.

"I'm delighted that we've been able to organise an official opening event to thank everyone formally", he added.
