With the big digital switchover underway in High Peak, householders have been urged to dispose of their old television responsibly.
The plea was made this week by the Borough Council, which collects the rubbish, and Derbyshire County Council, which gets rid of it.
There are several recycling options available to people buying a digital television and needing to dispose of their old one.
The borough council offers reasonably-priced collection of TVs and other electrical equipment for recycling while many retailers will collect old televisions or offer an in-store take back scheme.
Alternatively, TVs and other electrical items can be taken to household recycling centres at Waterswallows, near Buxton, or Melandra, at Glossop.
Said John Haken, Executive Councillor for Regeneration at the borough council: "Old televisions should not be placed in wheeled bins as they will be sent to landfill. Instead, we would encourage residents to help the environment by recycling their old set".
His words were echoed by John Allsop, County Council Cabinet Member for Technology and Recycling: "Our recycling centres in Buxton and Glossop are geared up to take your old TVs for free. I hope people will make good use of them and do their bit for the environment.
"If we don't drastically reduce how much rubbish we send to landfill, we'll face hefty Government fines - which could mean an increase in the Council Tax we all pay in the future", he warned.
