Date: 20/11/2009

A High Peak real ale enthusiast had cause for celebration when she won a gift voucher for an 18-pint box of Hartington Bitter in a prize draw staged for Buxton Beer Festival.

Catherine Gray, of Batham Gate Road, Peak Dale, near Buxton also won a gift voucher donated by Whim Ales.

Lucky Catherine was one of 10 prize winners at the festival, organised by High Peak Borough Council at Buxton's Pavilion Gardens as part of the Great Peak District Fair on Saturday and Sunday, 17 and 18 October.

The festival and accompanying Real Ale Trail gave visitors a chance to sample more than 20 of the finest real ales, most of which are produced at breweries and microbreweries in the heart of the Peak District.

Opened by Colin Sykes of BBC North West, the festival showcased northern brewing giant Hyde's plus local microbreweries including Buxton Brewery, Howard Town Brewery, Peak Ales, Thornbridge Brewery and Whim Ales.

Said Tony Kemp, Executive Councillor for Regeneration: "The aim of the festival was to help achieve our priority of a strong local economy by promoting our excellent microbreweries and attracting visitors to Buxton and High Peak.

"Our marquee featured many award-winning ales while our third-of-a-pint glasses gave customers the opportunity to get more from their tasting experience", he explained.

Prize draw runner up Gordon Sleigh, from Windsor Park Road, Buxton won a nine-pint mini cask of Wild Swan, brewed by Thornbridge Brewery.

Of the other eight runners up, Stuart Mills, of Carriers Meadow, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Mr P Easthorpe, of Glenbrook Hill, Glossop won three-bottle presentation packs from Buxton Brewery.

Three-bottle presentation packs from Howard Town Brewery went to Garry Leigh, from Sheffield; Mr G Holmes, of Derby; Ian and Diane Price, from Wyedale Close, Buxton and Frank Wood, from Dinting, Glossop.

John Wood, of Mill Bridge, Castleton won a polo shirt donated by Peak Ales.

"We're most grateful to our local independent breweries for generously donating prizes", added Councillor Kemp.
