Council shines light on Community Safety

Date: 19/11/2009

Community safety workers handed out dusk-to-dawn lights to more than 80 shoppers in Buxton town centre on Monday 2 November.

Intended to promote home security, the lights were being given away by High Peak Community Safety Partnership - along with crime prevention advice.

Ready to offer advice, left to right, are Sgt. Garry Staples, council antisocial behaviour co-ordinator Hannah Cocker and Sgt Martin Mullins.

The event was the last in the latest series of regular outreach sessions to tackle the fear of crime. The Buxton event in Spring Gardens had been preceded by town centre surgeries in Glossop and New Mills.

Said Andrew Bingham, Executive Borough Councillor for Social and Community Development: "We work hard with Derbyshire Constabulary, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and others to make High Peak a safe place in which to live.

"One of our key objectives is to address the fear of crime that many people have. High Peak has relatively low crime and is a safe place to live but news coverage of isolated incidents can create a false impression.

"Our town centre advice surgeries put crime in perspective while offering useful tips on home security. Pleasingly, most of the people to whom we spoke said they felt safe so the message seems to be getting through", he added.
