Council counts cost of missing bins

Date: 05/10/2009

High Peak Borough Council replaced more than 1,000 lost or stolen wheeled bins and recycling boxes in the year to August.

And the replacements cost the taxpayer more than £20,000.

Now, the council has urged residents to help keep the cost down by taking extra responsibility for the safekeeping of their bin.

The council has published the following tips on keeping bins and boxes safe and secure:

Said a council spokesperson: "As well as wasting money which could be better spent on providing council services, lost or stolen bins cause an eyesore when they're dumped in our towns and villages, and there's a risk of arson as well.

"We're asking all residents to be vigilant and reduce the financial burden on the taxpayer by taking care of their own bins and boxes", he urged.
