Volunteers are being invited to help clean up parts of Whaley Bridge on Saturday and Sunday 3 and 4 October.
Whaley Bridge Amenity Society is organising a clean up of the Memorial Park and will also be removing litter from Tom Brad's Croft at the Canal Basin. High Peak Borough Council's grounds maintenance team will be on hand with bags, litter picking tools and gloves to help the volunteers.
The event is part of Mersey Basin Week, sponsored by Viridor, which has been held every autumn for the last 16 years. It is the biggest event of its kind in the North West, and attracts hundreds of people who get involved in a multitude of water-related activities.
Anyone interested in joining the clean-up squads should meet at the Wheatsheaf Road entrance to the Memorial Park at 10am on Saturday 3 October; and at 10am in Tom Brad's Croft Car Park at the Canal Basin the following day. Both events are expected to last for two hours. A litter pickers' lunch for volunteers will be available at the Goyt Inn, off Bridge Street, at 12 noon on the Sunday.
Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development, said: "This annual community event is not to be missed if you enjoy helping to maintain our treasured beauty spots. The council is delighted to work with local groups and volunteers to enhance these lovely parts of Whaley Bridge."
Said Councillor John Pritchard, chairman of the amenity society and Etherow Goyt Partnership: "One of the society's aims is to stimulate public interest in, and care for, the beauty, history and character of Whaley Bridge and its surroundings. The autumn clean-up provides a chance for volunteers to come along and give us a hand. If you are interested, you will be more than welcome."
