Leisure Centre pass gives fun runners sporting chance

Date: 25/09/2009

Seventy runners earned themselves a seven-day pass for New Mills Leisure Centre by taking part in fun runs on Sunday 13 September.

Organised by High Peak Borough Council and DC Leisure, the annual events were part of the New Mills Festival, a cultural celebration staged each September.

One of the runs followed a five-mile return course from New Mills to Hayfield while the other was a three-mile race from New Mills to Birch Vale and back.

DC Leisure fitness instructor Tom Coatsworth swept all before him in the men's category of the Hayfield run while Verna Bradley was first past the post for the women.

Victorious in the Birch Vale men's event was nine-year-old Ferris Wild, son of 21-year-old Stacey Wild, general manager of New Mills Leisure Centre. In a battle for family pride, Stacey had to settle for second spot! Emma Hull won the women's race.

Said Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development: "Now in its eighth year, the fun run seems to attract a bigger field each year. It's an integral part of New Mills Festival and is a great way of bringing people together and encouraging healthy lifestyles".

The festival ended on Saturday 26 September in traditional fashion with a lantern parade.
