High Peak gets in the swim for cancer care

Date: 28/09/2009

High Peak swimmers made a splash by raising more than £4,000 for the treatment of cancer sufferers.

Buxton, Glossop and New Mills Pools were among 500 venues nationwide to support Swimathon 2009 for Marie Curie Cancer Care between Thursday 16 April and the following Sunday.

Between them, the nation's swimmers raised almost £1.5m to help terminally ill patients receive the best possible care free of charge.

The High Peak swims were organised for the Swimathon Foundation by the Borough Council and DC Leisure.

Said Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development: "I'm delighted that so many High Peak people took part and I'm thrilled at the amount of money raised. I'm now looking forward to next year's Swimathon and an even bigger turnout".

Marie Curie Cancer Care is one of the UK's largest charities. Employing more than 2,700 nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals, it provides care to around 27,000 terminally ill patients each year, and is the largest provider of hospice beds outside the NHS.
