Last chance to nominate sports stars

Date: 23/08/2010

Time is running out for High Peak folk to ensure that their sporting heroes and heroines earn the accolades they deserve.

Supporters have only until 5pm on Friday, September 3 to make nominations in all 13 categories of the area's annual Sports Awards, organised by the Borough Council and High Peak Community Sports Network to celebrate the achievements of star performers and the unsung backroom workers who help them along the road to glory.

The eagerly-awaited event celebrates the success of people involved in sport at all levels, and winners will be short listed for the prestigious Derbyshire Sports Awards.

The High Peak awards are open to anyone living in the borough or attending clubs or schools in the area. People can be nominated for more than one award, and self nominations are also accepted.

Jean Wharmby, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development, said: "This popular event is the community's way of shining the spotlight on our rich array of sporting talent and on the army of unassuming administrators whose hard work is rarely acknowledged but without whom we'd have no organised sport.

"The awards are very important to us as sport plays a crucial role in our work to promote healthy lifestyles", she explained.
