Longdendale Transport Strategy under microscope

Date: 22/02/2010

Transport plans have been drawn up by Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council that will affect Glossopdale.

The proposals are contained in a draft integrated transport strategy being developed by Tameside. The blueprints focus on Mottram but options include a new road from Mottram Moor to Brookfield, Glossop.

The emerging strategy describes a range of public transport options including more bus services, and a series of speed reduction measures.

Highway options include:

The strategy was unveiled by Tameside at a consultation event in Glossop on Friday (19 February).

Said High Peak Borough Council Leader Tony Ashton: "Although Tameside has started its public consultation, it hasn't yet consulted us. In fact, we've received hardly any information on the options.

"We have a number of questions to ask, and our position will also take on board the findings of the Glossopdale consultation.

"We'll also be talking with Derbyshire County Council, which hasn't yet been consulted either.

"We need to understand the impact of these proposals, not least as they're different in scale from the Longdendale by-pass scheme that we had previously supported.

"We have concerns about the possible adverse impact of the proposals on traffic congestion, air quality and road safety in Glossopdale", he added.

Councillor Chris Jackson, Derbyshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: "We want what's best for Derbyshire and we need to know more about the available options before we can decide whether or not to support them.

"We don't want to see traffic problems moved from Tameside into Glossopdale, and we'll be working with Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council and with High Peak Borough Council to consider any proposals and how they might impact on our county."

Residents have until Friday 14 May to write to Longdendale Integrated Transport Strategy Project Office, Room 3.21, Assistant Executive Director, Technical Services, Tameside Council Offices, Wellington Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside, OL6 6DL.
