Derbyshire Fire & Rescue (DFRS) were called to a fire at Haddon Hall - a 3-storey derelict building, on London Road in Buxton.
The fire began last night (24 February) at 19.18hrs. The third floor was well alight upon arrival at the incident and spread very quickly.
At the height of the blaze, around 50 firefighters from Buxton, New Mills, Whaley Bridge, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Bradwell, Longnor and Leek were in attendance with appliances at the scene, along with the Incident Command Unit from Ripley. Three main jets and 2 aerial ladder platforms were used to fight the blaze. The majority of the fire was extinguished by 23:00hrs and is now out. DFRS remained at the scene overnight as a precaution.
Derbyshire Police, the East Midlands Ambulance Service and officers from Derbyshire County Council and High Peak Borough Council were also in attendance.
The fire has caused partial damage to the building, which includes the stairs and lift area. The roof over the centre front and right hand front elevation has also been destroyed.
High Peak Borough Council instructed Derbyshire Fire and Rescue to remove the central 'Turret' structure under section 78 of the Building Act as it presented an 'imminent danger'.
The remainder of the structure has been re-surveyed today and the current owners of the site are being contacted in relation to assessing the building and making it safe.
It is unlikely that there will be any significant structural demolition this weekend, however there will be some minor demolition to include the removal of items such as slates, purlings, and some rain water goods. These are being removed in order to allow further investigations to take place and for health and safety reasons as high winds in Buxton are forecast this weekend.
The temporary highway restrictions have now been lifted
