Glossop needs your vision!

Date: 08/06/2010

People living and working in Glossop have been given a chance to play a hands-on role in making the town more attractive for residents, businesses and visitors alike.

The invitation was extended this week by Glossop Vision Board, a group of public, private and voluntary sector representatives working together to improve the vitality and prosperity of Glossop and its surrounding area.

Managed by High Peak Borough Council, the board is seeking nominations for two non-political representatives.

Anyone living or working in the town is eligible to stand for election, and no previous experience is needed.

Successful candidates would be expected to attend an evening board meeting every other month and to undertake training, if necessary, to enable them to play a full part in appraising and monitoring projects.

To apply, candidates should write a statement on no more than one side of A4 paper, explaining why they wish to stand, outlining relevant skills and saying whether their interest is that of a resident, business owner or group representative. Nominations should be returned by Monday 21 June.

The elections will take place at Bradbury Community House at 6.30pm on Thursday 1 July, when candidates may be asked a few brief questions.

Said John Haken, Executive Councillor for the Environment: "The board has helped deliver a wide range of projects including the Glossopdale Townscape Heritage Initiative, town centre improvement scheme and Manor Park refurbishment programme.

"The board was also responsible for the successful Shop Smart, Shop Local campaign to support our independent retailers. I'm confident that the board will continue to go from strength to strength, and that involvement will prove a rewarding experience for our two new recruits", he added.
